Understanding the decline in women’s healthy life expectancy in Wales
In Wales, women’s healthy life expectancy has declined over the past decade. The decline in women’s healthy life expectancy is more pronounced than for men in Wales and women in other UK nations (Iacobucci, 2024). This project aims to explore the individual and societal factors contributing to the decline in women’s healthy life expectancy and understand its implications for health and social care systems and policy and legislation in Wales.
The research has three key objectives:
•To identify and synthesise global evidence on factors influencing women’s healthy life expectancy.
•To identify key determinants contributing to women’s healthy life expectancy decline in Wales.
•To understand women’s lived experiences, perspectives on health, and barriers to achieving better health outcomes.
Research Impact
The study aligns with Welsh Government priorities, including A Healthier Wales (Welsh Government, 2024) and The Well-being of Future Generations Act 2015 (Welsh Government, 2015), which emphasise equity, sustainability, and the importance of addressing structural health disparities. The findings will contribute to the evidence base supporting policies and interventions that promote healthy ageing and gender equity in health outcomes across Wales.
