Making the move: Understanding the transition from child to adult mental health services for young people involved with social services
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) find themselves in a period of unprecedented demand, and over time, that demand is transferring to adult services. Transitioning from CAMHS to adult services is generally acknowledged to be a complex process with many young people often failing to qualify for support as adults.
There has been little identification of the complexities faced by those young people transitioning from CAMHS who are concurrently facing transitions in their social service provision, whether they are receiving care and support or are looked after by their local authority.
This research uses linked administrative data within the SAIL Databank to explore differing typologies of mental health service use experienced by young people in Wales. The aims are to identify those young people most at risk of falling through the net of support, and to inform future practice, policy and research to enable better support for young people in Wales as they transition to adulthood.
