Investigating the relationship between identity conflict and exercise behaviour in women
My research area is identity and sense of self in women, in the domain of exercise, sport, and physical activity, and specifically if sport/exercise related identities conflict or enhance gendered identities held (eg wife, mother). There is a gender exercise gap that has been shown to start from about age 8, and it continues through other phases of life. I am interested in psychological factors involved, what individual differences might lead women to have to experience conflict or enhancement, and also whether perceived 'masculine' or 'feminine' qualities of the activity itself influence conflict/enhancement.
