Election Systems in Wales: The Impact of Election Reform on Voting Behaviour, Ideology, and Political Understanding

My project focuses on the question of electoral systems in Wales, which became a salient issue due to the Welsh Government’s program of Senedd reform. Such a large change to the voting system has not been experienced in Wales since the formation of the Senedd, and so the impacts of electoral reform have not yet been studied. More specifically, I would like to explore whether the election system used at different levels of government (be that Westminster, Senedd, or local) impacts on voting behaviour, differences in ideology and electoral strategy on different levels of election, and voter understanding of politics.

Biography

I am a PhD research student at Cardiff University, researching the impact of electoral systems on voting behaviours, party ideology and policy, and the understanding of politics for the general public.

My research interests include electoral systems, voting behaviour, mixed-methods research, and comparative politics. In addition to my PhD work, I am interested in political theory, especially critical theory and post-structuralism.

Before coming to Cardiff to complete my MSc in Social Science Research Methods (Politics), I attended Aberystwyth University and studied Law and International Politics (LLB), in which I achieved first-class honours.
