Bridging the Gap: Continuity of Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment During Transitions into Custodial Settings
My research explores the experiences and treatment needs of individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) within the criminal justice system, focusing on transitions between community and custodial settings. Through co-production with professionals and people with lived experience, the project will examine access to alcohol treatment and support, continuity of care, alcohol-related health risks, hooch production and consumption, polydrug use, and potential links between AUD and reoffending. The aim is to inform evidence-based improvements to treatment pathways, reduce preventable harm and deaths, and improve outcomes for individuals transitioning into and out of custody.
Research Impact
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) remains under-researched within the criminal justice system compared with opioid dependence, particularly regarding treatment continuity and health risks during transitions into custody and following release. This research will address this gap by exploring lived experiences, service provision and opportunities to improve screening, treatment and withdrawal management. Findings aim to inform evidence-based service development, promote parity of care, reduce preventable harm and support more effective rehabilitation and reintegration. Initial discussions with treatment provider Kaleidoscope have been positive, with support for the research expressed.
Biography
My motivation for pursuing a PhD at the University of South Wales stems from my academic background in clinical psychology and my commitment to social justice. My research interests lie at the intersection of addiction, criminal justice and homelessness, where overlapping vulnerabilities are often addressed in isolation despite their interconnected nature.
I am particularly drawn to USW’s applied research, interdisciplinary expertise and commitment to community engagement and social impact. I hope to build on my academic and professional experience to produce rigorous, meaningful research that informs policy and practice, improves continuity of care for individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), and supports rehabilitation and reintegration following custody. Ultimately, I aspire to contribute to more effective, equitable and integrated services that reduce harm, address health inequalities and improve outcomes for vulnerable individuals and communities across Wales.
